For the cover, the band knew exactly what they wanted: business cards, suits, and the look of promotional material that would be more at home on a corporate software suite than a jazz-rock CD. The key to making the cover shot work was creating a logo for the band that contrasted with this stiff, corporate image enough for the viewer to question what they were seeing, and hopefully take a closer look.
The principal photo shoot was simple (in theory). We had planned out a number of key shots to be included in the album, including the double-page spread of the full band for the album interior, the drummer (Phil Palmer) accepting a packet of important papers at his drumkit, and the lead vocalist (Jon "Jed" Edwards) screaming into a 70's-style office phone mounted on a mic stand. A good bit of improv and a loose environment led to some absolutely wonderful shots that made it into the final insert below.
The physical album is accompanied by a printed front-and-back trifold insert, detailing how the Big Strong Arms have been "Serving You Since Right Now!" with "Diversity. Diversified." and give you more music per album than the leading store-brand band. Snarky, clever, and silly, the insert was a special treat to design when the content had to appear to make sense at first glance, but get more and more absurd the longer you looked.
